Best Surf Season (June - September)

The Southwest Monsoon breathes life into Mahabalipuram's surf scene from June through September. During this period, the prevailing winds shift to the west and southwest, blowing directly offshore at the Shore Temple and grooming the waves to perfection. While the dominant swell trains roll in from the south and south-southeast—far from the ideal east-northeast window—the consistent trade wind fetch still delivers punchy 1-1.5m waves with periods in the 8-9 second range. It's not world-class, but with clean conditions over a third of the time, this is the most reliable window for a fun session.

Fair Surf Season (May and October)

The shoulder months of May and October offer a mixed bag. May sees the onset of the southwest monsoon with offshore winds improving to 16% of the time, but the swell is still out of the south, limiting quality. October retains decent offshore wind from the west (32% ideal) as the northeast monsoon begins to build, and a wider spread of swell directions—including some easterly energy—can occasionally align for better waves. Surfable but inconsistent.

Low Surf Season (December - April)

The northeast monsoon dominates from December to April, bringing persistent onshore winds from the northeast and east that plague the spot. Even though the swell direction is optimal—waves from the east-northeast and east are abundant, especially from December through February—the constant onshore breeze chops up the surface and makes for sloppy conditions. With ideal wind occurring less than 8% of the time, these months are best left for tourism, not surf trips.

December: Cruel Irony

December features the most powerful swell of the winter, with an average height of 1.2m and a huge 46% of waves coming from the ideal east-northeast direction. But the wind is a cruel joke—onshore from the northeast and north-northeast over 70% of the time, with ideal conditions a mere 6%. The short 7-second period means the waves are steep and crumbly, often blown out. This month is a classic example of why wind is king; without it, even the best swell goes to waste.
