Best Surf Season (June - September)

The Southwest Monsoon breathes life into Mahabalipuram's surf scene from June through September. During this period, the prevailing winds shift to the west and southwest, blowing directly offshore at the Shore Temple and grooming the waves to perfection. While the dominant swell trains roll in from the south and south-southeast—far from the ideal east-northeast window—the consistent trade wind fetch still delivers punchy 1-1.5m waves with periods in the 8-9 second range. It's not world-class, but with clean conditions over a third of the time, this is the most reliable window for a fun session.

Fair Surf Season (May and October)

The shoulder months of May and October offer a mixed bag. May sees the onset of the southwest monsoon with offshore winds improving to 16% of the time, but the swell is still out of the south, limiting quality. October retains decent offshore wind from the west (32% ideal) as the northeast monsoon begins to build, and a wider spread of swell directions—including some easterly energy—can occasionally align for better waves. Surfable but inconsistent.

Low Surf Season (December - April)

The northeast monsoon dominates from December to April, bringing persistent onshore winds from the northeast and east that plague the spot. Even though the swell direction is optimal—waves from the east-northeast and east are abundant, especially from December through February—the constant onshore breeze chops up the surface and makes for sloppy conditions. With ideal wind occurring less than 8% of the time, these months are best left for tourism, not surf trips.

January: Northeast Monsoon Grip

The northeast monsoon is in full swing, with relentless onshore winds from the northeast and east-northeast howling at 10-30kph over 60% of the time. This destroys any potential from the otherwise excellent swell window—42% of waves arrive from the east at a fun 0.5-1.5m, but with a short 7-second period and wind-ruined faces, expect choppy, messy conditions. Offshore breezes are a rare 5% gift, usually light from the west-northwest.
