Fair Surf Season (April - May & September - October)

As spring arrives, the storm track weakens. Average swell heights drop to 1.6-1.7m and periods shorten to 10.7-11.8s. The dominant WNW swell becomes less consistent, and offshore wind frequency falls to 7-16%. While you still get rideable waves, the quality is far more variable, often accompanied by onshore afternoon breezes from the W or SW. October marks the transition back towards winter, with swell and wind quality improving (29% offshore). September can see long-period remnants of early-season storms or tropical systems, but winds are often cross-shore from the WNW. These months offer occasional good sessions but require careful timing as the balance between swell and clean wind is delicate.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is largely a write-off for big-wave hunting at Mavericks. The North Pacific high pressure dominates, shifting the storm track far north. Average swell heights bottom out at 1.2-1.3m with short periods (10.1-10.3s). Offshore wind is virtually non-existent (2-5% of the time). The swell is dominated by weak, small WNW swell, often chopped up by sea breezes from the W and WSW. The combination of small, weak waves and mostly onshore winds means conditions are rarely good for this demanding break. This is the time to travel to more exposed, swell-catching spots or focus on smaller, more protected breaks that handle the summer conditions.
