Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these six months, delivering a consistent barrage of powerful groundswells from the NW to W quadrant. Average swell heights range from 2.1m to 2.8m with periods frequently exceeding 12s, translating to firing, pumping waves at Meio da Baja. The percentage of ideal offshore wind (from S, SSW, SW, WSW) peaks between 25% and 34%, thanks to frequent high-pressure systems over mainland Europe that funnel light southern winds. This is the prime window for scoring clean, groomed waves; however, expect occasional onshore northerly winds (N, NW, NNW) during storm passages. The NAO is often negative, steering low-pressure tracks directly into Portugal, maximizing swell energy. Plan your trip for these months to experience the spot at its best.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

Transitional months where winter's punch fades and summer's lull hasn't fully set in. Average swell heights drop to 1.7-2.1m and periods shorten to 9.9-11.2s, producing fun, rippable waves but lacking the raw power of winter. The Azores High begins to build, increasing northerly winds that are onshore at Meio da Baja. Ideal wind percentages hover around 15-17%, making clean surf a less frequent but rewarding find. Swell direction remains primarily NW and NNW, often wrapping in with decent shape. You can score good sessions if you time the southerly wind windows or dawn patrol when wind is lighter.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with a persistent northerly wind regime driven by a strong Azores High. Average swell heights bottom out at 1.5-1.6m with periods of 8.6-9.2s, resulting in small, groveling waves that are often choppy due to the dominant onshore flow from N and NNW (combined over 65% of all wind observations). Ideal offshore wind conditions are scarce, occurring only 5-10% of the time. Swell energy is minimal, and the few waves that arrive are short-period and lack punch. This is the off-season for serious surfers; only the occasional south-wind event or a rare longer-period NW swell can salvage a session. Best suited for beginners or travellers who just want to be in the water.

April: Transition to Spring Swells

April marks a noticeable transition as average swell height drops to 2.1m and period to 11.2s. The swell direction is still dominated by NW (25.1%), NNW (19.8%) and WNW (19.7%), but the energy shifts to more moderate sizes – most waves fall in the 1-2m range, considered fun, good, solid. The wind regime becomes less favourable for Meio da Baja: ideal offshore winds occur only 17% of the time. Northerly winds (N 20.1%, NNW 17.0%) become the norm, often blowing 20-30kph and creating choppy, onshore conditions. Swell periods are now mostly 9-12s, so the waves are punchy but lack the heavy grunt of winter. Dawn patrol can offer temporary glassy conditions before the sea breeze kicks in. April is a month for the dedicated surfer who is willing to wait for the rare southern wind window.
