Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic swings into full gear as autumn deepens, and Mindelo reaps the rewards. From October through March, the average swell height stays well above 2.4m, and the wave period consistently clocks in at 12–12.6s – long-period, powerful groundswell generated by intense extratropical storms marching across the Atlantic. The prevailing wind regime during these months is dominated by easterly and northeasterly flows (NE–E), which blow cleanly offshore for Mindelo's west-southwest-facing shoreline. This combination delivers pumping, firing waves in the 1.5–2.5m range with epic period, and the occasional XL overhead sessions when the Atlantic really wakes up. Wind conditions are ideal roughly 46–50% of the time, making this the prime window for serious surfers.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September serve as the transitional months – the swell drops off but still holds respectable size. April averages 2.1m with a period of 10.9s, while September comes in at 1.6m and 10.4s. Both months see a shift in the dominant wind patterns: northerly and northwesterly winds (NNW–NW) become more common, which are cross-shore to slightly onshore and can degrade wave quality. However, when the wind does align from the east, you can still score clean, fun-sized waves in the 1–1.5m range. The fair season is best for the dedicated surfer willing to pick the windows.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, Mindelo enters its low-energy phase. Average swell heights drop to 1.4–1.7m, and periods fall to 8.6–9.8s – generally short-period, weaker windswell or background NW swell that lacks the punch of winter. The dominant wind direction swings to the north-northwest and northwest (NNW–NW), blowing directly onshore and ruining wave quality. Ideal wind conditions drop to just 20–29% of the time. While you can still find a clean groveling session on a smaller board when a rare easterly breeze lines up, the consistent quality just isn't there. This is the time to chase other spots or wait for the autumn storms to return.

October: Sweet Spot of the Transition

October delivers a jump in swell: average height 2.1m, period 11.1s. The swell direction is dominated by NW (26.7%) and WNW (21.1%), with a growing contribution from W (8.7%) and WSW (3.2%) – all good for Mindelo. Wave heights favor the 1.5–2m and 2–2.5m classes, with a solid amount of overhead-plus sets. Ideal wind reaches 42%, as the wind roses show a more balanced distribution: northerly (N 10.1%, NNE 6.4%) and easterly (E 6.1%, NE 5.3%) winds provide frequent offshore flow. The Atlantic storms are ramping up, and when the pressure aligns, you get long period, powerful surf with clean conditions – the best of both worlds.
