The synoptic pattern becomes more variable: high-pressure ridges still deliver north winds, but tropical lows and early-season heat troughs can inject unwanted southerly flows. You'll find plenty of rideable days, especially when a strong cold front passes and the post-frontal north wind aligns with a long-period S or SSW swell. Summer brings the Cape's infamous south-easterly winds, which blow directly onshore at Muizenberg, chopping up even the most promising swell. The average swell height drops to 2.3-2.4m, and while periods remain respectable around 11-11.4 seconds, the dominant swells from the SW, SSW, and S arrive with a persistent SSE or SE wind that ruins the surface. The ideal offshore wind frequency plummets to a mere 11-16%, making clean surf a rare commodity. Occasional weak cold fronts slipping past the continent can still deliver a few days of lighter north wind, and short-period wind swells from the south can offer fun-sized groveling waves (0.5-1.5m) when the wind backs off. But for the most part, summer is a waiting game – keep an eye on the forecast for those brief interludes of offshore flow, usually at dawn before the daily south-easter picks up.

March: Fading Summer, Emerging Hints
