Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the Indonesian wet season delivers a dream scenario for Nusa Dua. From November through March, the northwest monsoon pumps consistent offshore winds out of the N to NW quadrants, grooming the southeast-facing beach breaks into pristine form. Swell energy remains solid thanks to a steady diet of long-period groundswells generated by storms in the Southern Ocean. Average wave heights hover in the 1.6-1.7m range with periods often exceeding 12 seconds, producing rippable, punchy waves that are both fun and powerful. Ideal wind frequencies peak at 60-63% in December-February, making this the undisputed prime window for quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

The transitional months of April and October represent a mixed bag. The monsoon is shifting, and while the Indian Ocean still sends long-period swell (averaging 1.8m and 13.8s in October, 1.7m and 13.8s in April), the wind regime becomes less reliable. Offshore wind frequency drops to 11-19%, with increasing onshore flow from the S and SE during the day. Morning sessions can still score clean conditions before the sea breeze kicks in, but the overall consistency takes a hit. These are months of margin – patience is key, but when a cold front passes and the winds align, the waves can be world-class.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From May through September, the southeast monsoon firmly establishes itself over Bali. This brings a near-constant onslaught of strong onshore winds from the SE to S directions, directly hitting Nusa Dua and trashing the wave quality. Offshore wind frequency plummets to a paltry 0-3%. While the swell is at its most powerful – average heights of 2.0-2.2m and periods of 14-14.4s – the wind-ruined conditions make it nearly impossible to find a clean wave. The rare day with a brief lull or a lucky window of N quadrant breeze can turn on some heavy, hollow moments, but for the vast majority of the time, this is a period to avoid for Nusa Dua. It is, however, the peak season for exposed south coast breaks elsewhere on the island.

January: Peak Northwest Monsoon Gold

January represents the absolute peak of the northwest monsoon, delivering a stunning 63% of offshore wind conditions. The wind primarily comes from the W and WNW at 10-20kph, providing light to moderate offshore flow that grooms the swell to perfection. Swell is dominated by SSW (36%) and SW (47%) directions, with the majority of waves landing in the 1-2m range and an average period of 12.4s. This translates to fun, solid, and rippable surf most days, with the occasional pumping 1.5-2.5m sets when a stronger SSW pulse arrives. The combination of long-period groundswell and consistent offshore breeze makes January a premier month for all abilities at Nusa Dua.
