Best Surf Season (April - June)

This is the sweet spot of the year at Ombak Tujuh. As the transition from the wet to the dry season takes hold, the Indian Ocean comes alive with long-period groundswells from the south and southwest, consistently delivering 1.5-2.5m waves with periods pushing 14 seconds. At the same time, the strengthening southeast trades are still far enough away that the region enjoys a high frequency of offshore winds from the NE to E quadrant. April sees ideal winds over half the time, and May peaks at 56%, making for clean, organized lines that wrap perfectly into the bay. When the combination of solid SW swell and light easterly winds aligns, this is as good as it gets – pumping, rippable waves with minimal chop.

Fair Surf Season (March, July, October, November)

These months offer a mix of excellent swells and frustrating onshore winds. March still benefits from the tail end of the NW monsoon, delivering consistent SSW swell and a 36% ideal wind window. July and early October see the peak of the trade wind season with massive 2m+ swell from the Southern Ocean, but the dominant SE winds blow directly cross-shore, often adding texture. However, occasional breaks in the trades or a passing cold front can flip the wind to offshore, providing some world-class sessions. November marks the return of the monsoon transition, with ideal wind percentages climbing back to 40% as the swell size begins to back off from its winter peak.

Low Surf Season (January, February, August, September, December)

During these months, the surf quality takes a hit due to either small swell or persistent onshore wind. January and February are the heart of the monsoon, with average swell around 1.6m and periods of 12s, but winds blow predominantly from the NW to W sector, often ruining the wave face. The offshore windows are limited to 24-28% of the time. August and September represent the trade wind peak: enormous 2.2m swell with 14s periods, but the almost relentless SE wind (70-80% of the time) keeps the ocean choppy and bumpy. Only the most exposed breaks can handle this. On the rare days when the trades ease or shift to the NE, the reward is heavy, grinding barrels, but those days are few and far between. December is a transitional month with moderate swell and limited offshore windows (29%), making it a hit-or-miss affair.

October: Winds Waver, Swell Stays

October marks the beginning of the wind shift away from the strong trades. Swell is still solid: 1.9m average with 13.6s period. The direction is overwhelmingly S (54.2%) and SSW (34.6%), perfect for the break. But the wind field is in transition. SE is still dominant at 65.6%, but lighter speeds are more common (10-20kph). Ideal wind rises to 27%, offering more frequent offshore windows from the NE. The trades are weakening, and occasional bursts of NW flow from the approaching monsoon also help. As a result, early mornings and late afternoons can produce clean, powerful waves. This month requires a watchful eye on the forecast – the combination of solid swell and intermittent offshore winds can yield some of the best dynamic surf of the year.
