Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during autumn and winter, unleashing a consistent barrage of powerful, long-period swell that slams into Orrua’s north-facing shoreline. From October through March, average wave heights range from 1.6m to 2.1m, with periods often exceeding 11 seconds—pumping, firing conditions when it all lines up. The key is the wind: synoptic-scale low-pressure systems tracking across the Bay of Biscay drag in offshore SSE to SSW breezes, giving you clean, groomed faces. With ideal wind percentages peaking at 45-46% in October and December, this is your window for world-class barrels and rippable walls. The NAO index often shifts negative, steering storms southward and fueling the Atlantic conveyor belt. When a deep low stalls west of Ireland, expect northwest-to-northwest swell trains to march in with 12-14 second intervals and 1.5-2.5m heights—absolute gold for Orrua.

Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)

As winter’s fury fades, the transition months offer a mixed bag of fun-sized waves and lighter crowds. April and May see average swell heights drop to 1.2-1.5m and periods settle into the 9-11 second range—still punchy enough for a grovel session on a shortboard or fish. Wind patterns become more variable; the percentage of ideal offshore winds (SSE to SSW) falls to 30-33%. However, the swell direction remains dominated by NW and WNW, which are optimal for the spot. In September, the Atlantic reawakens with early-season storm pulses, pushing average heights back up to 1.3m and periods to 10.4s. You’ll find plenty of rideable, clean waves if you pick your days—especially when a high-pressure ridge to the west combines with a trough over Spain to funnel in light southerlies.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer at Orrua is a test of patience. The Azores High ridges in, suppressing storm activity across the North Atlantic and shrinking average wave heights to a mere 1.0m, with periods barely scraping 9 seconds. The swell is overwhelmingly from the NW, but it’s weak and often messy. Even worse, the wind regime flips: thermal gradients drive persistent onshore breezes from the N, NNE, and NNW, which are directly onshore for this north-facing beach. Ideal offshore wind percentages bottom out at 19-23%. Most days you’ll face choppy, waist-high whitewash—good for a beginner’s lesson or a foil session, but forget about any real power. A rare tropical storm or late-season depression can salvage a few days, but climatologically, this is the low season.

July: Peak Summer Slog

July is the toughest month for surf at Orrua. Average height holds at 1.0m with the lowest average period of the year at 8.8s. Swell direction is still NW (65.3%), but nearly all waves are under 1.5m, with 36% in the 0.5-1m range—‘micro’ to ‘small’. The ideal wind window shrinks to a mere 19%; S and SSW winds are almost non-existent (combined ~4.4%). Meanwhile, persistent onshore flow from N (11.4%), NNE (12.8%), and NNW (12.4%) ruins wave quality. Thermal heating creates daily sea breezes that add chop. The few clean days come from a passing afternoon thunderstorm or a weak cold front. Not recommended unless you’re desperate for a splash.
