Best Surf Season (May - November)

As the Pacific intertropical convergence zone relaxes, Panama Viejo settles into its most consistent window. Average swell heights creep up to 0.5m during these months, and while that's hardly pumping, the wave quality peaks thanks to lighter offshore winds from the north-northwest. The S to SSW groundswell trains, often sporting 9-12 second intervals, deliver fun-sized runners that wrap into the southeast-facing bay. This is the time for groveling on high-volume boards, with the occasional punchy set sneaking through. Expect the highest percentage of clean, rideable waves from May through November, especially when the morning glass-off aligns with a fresh S pulse.

Fair Surf Season (April & December)

April and December act as transitional bookends. Swell heights dip slightly to 0.4m on average, and the wind regime weakens in April but ramps back up in December. Offshore flow remains common from the N-NW quadrant, but the waves are often too small to break properly, especially during mid-day onshores. Still, the long-period leftovers from winter storm tracks can surprise—if you're willing to paddle hard for a waist-high gem. These months demand patience and a quiver of floaters.

Low Surf Season (January - March)

The height of the dry season brings the smallest waves of the year. Average swell height bottoms out at 0.3m, while the trades strengthen, often exceeding 20 kph from the north. The result is a bumpy, blown-out micro surface, even though the wind direction is technically offshore. Long-period SSW groundswell (11-13s) rolls past the point but lacks the oomph to break cleanly. Only 0-1% of the time do you get truly ideal conditions. Leave the shortboards at home; this is strictly a longboard or skimboard affair.

July: Summer Sweet Spot

July is statistically the best month for quality surf at Panama Viejo. Average swell height is 0.5m, period 11.0s, and SSW swell floods the coast at 99.6%. The breakdown shows a remarkable 26.9% in the 0.5-1m range and even 0.1% in the 1-1.5m category—rare for this spot. Wind patterns are pristine: NW (33.8%) and NNW (15.2%) blow gently at 0-10 kph, with NW winds often exceeding 10 kph but rarely over 20. The ideal percentage crests at 19%. This is the month to plan a trip. Expect clean, peeling walls in the waist-to-chest-high range, especially on a rising tide with light offshore NW flow. You might even get a few overhead sets if a strong S pulse aligns.
