Best Surf Season (May - October)

During the Northern Hemisphere summer and early fall, the Pacific basin comes alive with consistent southern hemi groundswells that wrap into the coast of Costa Rica. Pan Dulce, facing east, picks up these long-period SSW and SW pulses with remarkable efficiency. The average swell height climbs to 1.1m, with wave periods often exceeding 13s, delivering powerful, rippable lines. The wind regime shifts to a steady offshore flow from the W, WNW, and NW, keeping conditions glassy and clean 77-85% of the time. This is the window for firing, hollow waves as the combination of solid swell and light offshore winds aligns perfectly.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & November)

Shoulder months see the swell machine shifting gears. March and April still produce decent SSW swell, though average heights dip slightly to 0.8-0.9m while periods remain long (13-14s). The wind remains favorable, but the more variable direction patterns can introduce occasional onshore breezes. November marks the tail end of the rainy season with average swell dropping to 1.0m and period shortening to 12s, but still fun when the conditions line up. Expect a mix of clean mornings and afternoon wind shifts.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

During the heart of the dry season, the Pacific storm track retreats and swell production takes a noticeable dip. Average heights settle around 0.7-0.8m, though periods remain in the 12-13s range thanks to distant groundswell sources. The wind stays largely offshore from the W and WNW, keeping the wave face clean, but the smaller size often leaves surfers longing for more punch. This is the season for groveling and smaller wave boards, with the occasional fun-sized pulse when a robust front pushes into the North Pacific.

October: Transition Begins, Still Strong

October maintains an average height of 1.1m and period of 12.4s. Swell direction shifts slightly: 87.3% SSW and 12.7% SW, with 49.2% in the 1-1.5m range and 1.7% in the 1.5-2m range. Ideal wind stays at a very high 84%, with WNW still the dominant offshore direction (23.3%). The swell size and quality remain excellent, but the period is slowly shortening. Still a fantastic month for surf, especially in the first half.
