Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months as the polar jet stream drives a relentless procession of extratropical storms across the basin. Pedrogao, with its west-facing exposure, captures the full force of long-period WNW to NW groundswells — the average height hovers between 2.0-2.5m and periods stretch to 11-13s, providing powerful, well-formed waves. A positive NAO phase often amplifies this activity, yet it also increases the frequency of onshore west winds. However, when high pressure ridges into the Bay of Biscay, it funnels offshore winds from the east and southeast, creating pristine conditions. The ideal wind window remains open 25-34% of the time, making these months the most reliable for quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the ocean transitions from winter fury to summer calm, the swell pulse becomes more inconsistent. April and September still benefit from occasional long-period NW swells that break in the 1.5-2.0m range, with periods around 10-11s. The ideal wind frequency drops to 18-19%, but when the right synoptic setup aligns — a lingering Azores high or a passing cold front — the surf can be clean and rippable. May is a step down: average height falls to 1.5m with 10s periods, and favorable winds only occur 14% of the time. These months are best for those willing to gamble on a good day rather than a consistent season.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in and Pedrogao slips into a classic Mediterranean-style lull. The dominant swell shifts to short-period, locally generated NW windswell, averaging just 1.3-1.4m with 8.7-9.3s periods — often small, weak, and easily chopped by the persistent NNW and N winds that blow over 60% of the time. Ideal offshore conditions are a rarity, occurring only 5-9% of the entire season. The waves rarely exceed 1.5m, and when they do, they are usually accompanied by onshore winds. Unless you’re a beginner or desperate for a paddle, these months are best spent exploring other corners of the world.

October: The Revival

October is a turning point. The average swell jumps to 1.9m with 11.4s period, driven by the return of vigorous North Atlantic storm systems. Swell direction spreads nicely across NW (35.4%), WNW (24.6%), and W (8.3%), delivering a variety of angles that suit Pedrogao perfectly. Many waves arrive in the 1.5-2.5m sweet spot, providing punchy surf with plenty of power. Ideal wind reaches 28%, and the prevailing winds shift away from pure northerlies toward more variable directions, including a higher proportion of SSW (7.2%) and SW (6.4%) which, while onshore, are often lighter. The most magical days come when a large low pressure system passes to the north, sending in long-period WNW swell while a ridge of high pressure over Spain delivers clean east winds. This is when Pedrogao truly shines.
