Best Surf Season (May - October)

The southwest monsoon takes over during these months, shifting the prevailing wind patterns to a favorable southerly quadrant for Pencit Reef. From May through September, the trade winds relax and the region sees a high frequency of offshore winds from the S, SSW, SW, and WSW—ideal for grooming the NE-facing break. While the average swell heights drop to the 0.7-1.1m range (small to fun-sized), the wave quality skyrockets with clean, lined-up faces and glassy conditions. October marks a transitional peak where swell energy begins to ramp up again, offering a sweet spot of moderate-sized (1.1m average) long-period groundswell with still-decent offshore wind odds (35% ideal). Expect punchy, rippable waves on the best days, especially when typhoon activity in the Pacific sends longer-period pulses into the Philippine Sea.

Fair Surf Season (November & April)

These shoulder months sit at the crossroads of the northeast and southwest monsoons. November sees the return of the NE trades, bringing consistent swell in the 1.3m range from the NE and ENE—the best directions for Pencit Reef. However, the wind becomes a mixed bag, with onshore NE winds dominating roughly 88% of the time. Still, the 12% window of southerly offshore flows can deliver some excellent, powerful sessions as long-period swell (9.9s average) wraps in. April is similar but opposite: the monsoon is fading, swell drops to 1.1m, and ideal wind windows open up to 8%. It's a hit-or-miss month, but when the S wind aligns with a late-season NE pulse, you can score fun, clean waves with fewer crowds.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

This is the heart of the northeast monsoon, when the trade winds blow strong and steady from the NE and ENE—directly onshore at Pencit Reef. Swell heights are at their annual peak, averaging 1.3-1.7m with periods around 9.5-10s, meaning plenty of powerful, pumping energy hits the reef. The catch? The wind is consistently bad, with ideal offshore conditions occurring only 3-6% of the time. Most days are choppy, messy, and blown out, making it difficult to find a clean wave. Occasional cold fronts pushing south can briefly flip the wind to the S, but these windows are rare and often short-lived. If you time it perfectly, you might catch a glassy morning with a firing NE swell—but patience is key during these months.

December: Full-On Monsoon Power

December brings the northeast monsoon to its peak. Average swell height is 1.6m with a period of 10.0s, and the swell is almost exclusively from the NE (60.1%) and ENE (24.8%). Wave heights frequently reach 1.5-2.5m, putting the reef in 'firing' mode. The wind, however, is relentlessly onshore: NE (18.5%), ENE (24.9%), and E (15.5%) dominate, and ideal wind from the south occurs only 6% of the time. The limited offshore windows are brief and often occur in the early morning before the trades kick in. When they align, expect powerful, hollow waves with incredible shape. For the persistent surfer, December offers the biggest surf of the year—but you'll have to work hard to find the clean ones.
