This is when the bay really turns on, offering powerful, well-shaped lines that wrap into the south-facing beach. Get ready for some pumping sessions.

Fair Surf Season (March & October)

The transition months of March and October serve up a mixed bag. Swell energy remains good, averaging 1.7m to 1.8m with long periods around 11.7-11.8s, but the wind window tightens. Ideal offshore flow drops to the 12-18% range as the synoptic pattern becomes more fickle. You'll still score plenty of fun waves, especially when a strong high-pressure system parks over the continent and funnels clean NW winds across the coast. Just be ready to pick your days.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

During late spring and summer, the surf at Pennington Bay takes a backseat. While swell from the Southern Ocean still filters in at 1.7m on average with 11s periods, the dominant wind patterns shift. Sea breezes and synoptic onshore flow from the SE and SSE dominate, spoiling conditions with cross-onshore chop. Ideal offshore wind occurs less than 13% of the time. You can still find fun-sized waves on the rare day when a cold front passes through and a NW wind clean-up follows, but consistency is low. Time to plan a trip north or just take a break.

February: Late Summer Lull with a Side of Chop

February mirrors January closely. Average swell height holds at 1.7m, with a similar period of 11.2s. Swell directions remain dominated by SSW (41.6%) and SW (19.6%), providing consistent energy. However, the wind pattern is stubborn: SE (25.8%) and SSE (21.3%) still rule, generating onshore conditions that degrade wave quality. Ideal offshore winds (N, NNW, NW) account for a mere 9% of the time. The swell is powerful enough to produce rideable waves, but the constant onshore flow keeps things bumpy. Look for early morning windows or hope for a southerly buster to swing the wind around.
