The North Atlantic engine fires on all cylinders from October through March, delivering the prime surf window at Playa de Traba. Average swell heights range from 2.5m to 3.3m, with periods regularly in the 11 to 13-second range – a powerful, long-period punch that this NNW-facing beach is designed to handle. The dominant swell directions are NW, WNW, and NNW, which wrap perfectly into the bay. The wildcard is the wind: offshore conditions from S-SSW occur 20-27% of the time, setting up clean, groomed lines. When a deep low pressure system tracks across the Bay of Biscay and stalls, expect pumping, firing waves in the 1.5-2.5m range with light offshore breezes. These are the days that make the long drive worth it.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the Atlantic storm track begins to relax, April, May, and September offer a transitional blend. Swell heights drop to the 1.9-2.4m range, and periods shorten to 9.8-10.7 seconds – still rideable and punchy, but lacking the raw power of winter. The NW to N swells persist, but the wind becomes more fickle. Ideal offshore winds occur 18-23% of the time, often tied to high-pressure systems settling over the Iberian Peninsula. On the right day, you can score fun, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range with glassy conditions, especially during early morning thermal effects. It's a good time for logging or groveling on a groveler – not epic, but far from flat.

Low Surf Season (June, July, August)

Summer is the quietest period for Playa de Traba. The North Atlantic's fury is muted, with average swell heights hovering around 1.5-1.6m and periods dipping to 8.5-9.0 seconds – typical windswell and weak groundswell. The dominant swell directions shift to NW and N, but these are often accompanied by onshore winds from the same quadrants (N, NW, NNW), which dominate the wind rose. Ideal offshore winds plummet to just 12-15% of the time. The result is a lot of small, choppy, and messy conditions. Occasional pulses from distant storms can deliver fun-sized waves in the 1-1.5m range, but you'll need to pick your windows carefully, often early morning before the sea breeze kicks in. For most surfers, this is the time to explore other activities or just enjoy the beach.

June: Small Swells and North Winds

June settles into summer mode with average swell 1.6m and period 9.0s – marginal. The swell direction is still predominantly NW: WNW (20.0%), NW (19.1%), and NNW (19.1%) dominate the spectrum, but these are often small, short-period pulses. The wind is the real story: NE winds (25.0%) are a constant presence, with NNE (17.7%) adding to the onshore flow. Ideal offshore conditions drop to 15%. Waves are typically small and groveling in the 0.5-1m range. June is for the goofy-footers on a groveler. The rare east or southeast wind event can clean things up, but don't expect barrels – focus on fun, rippable walls.
