Best Surf Season (May - October)

The heart of the rainy season brings a dramatic shift in the local wind regime as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) stalls overhead. The persistent north-east trade winds that dominate the dry season weaken considerably, replaced by light to moderate south-west to west-northwest flows. These blow directly offshore at Playa El Toro, grooming the surface of a reliable, long-period groundswell generated by Southern Hemisphere storm tracks. With wave heights consistently in the 1–1.5 m range and periods stretching past 13 seconds, the waves are clean, punchy, and fun-sized. Ideal wind conditions occur over 50% of the time, making this the prime window for quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (November - December)

As the ITCZ retreats southward, the north-east trade winds begin to reassert themselves, lowering the percentage of offshore days. November still offers a solid chance of clean conditions with nearly 60% ideal wind, but the average wave period drops to the 10–12 second range, reducing power and consistency. December sees a further decline, with onshore winds dominating and the swell mix shifting back to shorter-period north swells. Occasional long-period pulses from the south can still sneak through, but the quality becomes more intermittent and requires careful timing.

Low Surf Season (January - April)

Strong north-east trade winds become entrenched during these months, blowing directly onshore at Playa El Toro. The wind is ideal less than 8% of the time from January through March, and even April only reaches 18%. Swell energy is a blend of short-period northern hemisphere windswell (8–10 s) and the last gasps of southern hemi groundswell, but constant onshore winds chop up the surface and degrade wave shape. While the average height holds around 1.1 m, most days are blown out and messy. Only the occasional break in the trades, often associated with a passing cold front or a southward dip in the jet stream, can produce a brief window of clean waves.

March: Glimmers of Change

While the trades still dominate (52.6% wind from N, ideal wind only 5%), the swell picture begins to evolve. Southern swell from the SSW makes up 38% of the energy, bringing a longer period of 12.4 s. This swell can wrap into the bay when conditions align, but the wind is rarely cooperative. Wave heights stay around 1.1 m, with a fair share in the 0.5–1.5 m range. A few north swells also linger. The month remains poor overall, but the seeds of the upcoming shift are planted – watch for a south-west wind day to sneak in a session.
