Playa Hermosa seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of the dry season delivers the most consistent offshore wind patterns for Playa Hermosa. From December through March, the North Pacific High strengthens, driving light but reliable winds from the N through ENE quadrants. This coincides with solid, long-period SSW groundswells—averaging 1.0m at 12-13s—that wrap into the southwest-facing beach perfectly. February stands out with the highest percentage of clean, offshore conditions (36%), making it the prime time for groomed, rippable waves. Expect fun-sized to good conditions most days, with occasional pumping pulses pushing into the 1.5-2m range.

Fair Surf Season (April - July)

As the dry season transitions into the early rainy season, offshore winds become less reliable, dropping to around 27% in April and the low 20s by May. However, the Southern Hemisphere winter comes alive, pumping more powerful SSW swell across the Pacific. Average wave heights climb to 1.3-1.4m with periods often exceeding 14 seconds. These are the months for bigger, heavier waves, but you'll have to pick your windows carefully—early mornings or late afternoons when the thermal gradient tilts northward. Just before the afternoon sea breeze kicks in, quality sessions can materialise.

Low Surf Season (August - November)

The height of the rainy season brings persistent onshore winds from the SW and W quadrants, dominating over 80% of the time. Offshore wind days become rare, dropping to as low as 18% in October. Swell energy remains high—still 1.4m on average with long periods—but the accompanying wind chop and cross-breezes often spoil the surface texture. Look for brief windows following cold fronts or tropical waves that shift the wind north of east. October and November can produce the occasional epic session when a synoptic-scale low aligns with a light offshore flow, but consistency is poor.
