Best Surf Season (May - October)

During the southern hemisphere winter, the Pacific comes alive as intense low-pressure systems spin up in the Southern Ocean and South Pacific. These systems send consistent, long-period SSW to SW groundswells marching towards the Costa Rican coast. Swell heights average a solid 1.4 to 1.5m with periods pushing 13 to 14 seconds – classifying as powerful, ripable surf. The Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts north, weakening the trade winds. Mornings often deliver glassy offshore conditions from the NE-ENE quadrant, with ideal wind statistics ranging from 56% to 77% of the time. This is the prime window for Playa Negra's famous peeling lefts.

Fair Surf Season (November - April)

The northern hemisphere winter brings a different regime. The North Pacific High intensifies, driving strong, gusty NE to ENE trade winds – often in the 10-30 kph range. These winds groom the waves but can also create bumpy texture. Swell heights dip slightly to an average of 1.3m, and periods shorten to 11-13 seconds. While southern hemisphere swells still arrive, they are increasingly mixed with north quadrant swell from the North Pacific (N-NE). These north swells are often smaller and less organized, but when a SSW window aligns with morning offshore wind, the result is punchy, rideable surf. Overall, consistent waves but with more wind influence.

Low Surf Season (None)

Playa Negra is blessed with year-round consistency thanks to its exposure to both southern and northern hemisphere swell windows. Even during the transition months of September and October, when onshore winds from the SW become more frequent and the ideal wind percentage drops to 48-54%, the swell is still substantial. Patience and a good forecast will reward you with long period power when the wind swings offshore. There is no true low season – it's always surfable.

December: Peak Trades and Mixed Swell

December closes the year with strong trade winds and a mixed swell menu. The average height is 1.3m, and the period drops to 11.7 seconds. Swell direction becomes more diverse: SSW (31.1%) and SW (18.7%) still lead, but north quadrant swells (N, NNE, NE, etc.) combine for a significant share – about 37% of the wave energy comes from northern directions. These north swells are typically shorter period and smaller, but when they align with the powerful offshore trades, they can produce fun, punchy surf. Wind is overwhelmingly from the NE (50.7%) and ENE (29.2%), with speeds often in the 10–30 kph range. Ideal wind percentage is 75%. The strong trades keep the surface clean but can be gusty. The best waves occur when a southerly swell component mixes with the north energy, creating a longer period, better-organized wave. Overall, December offers reliable, groomed surf suitable for most skill levels.
