Best Surf Season (November - April)

The dry season delivers the most reliable combination of offshore winds and rideable swell to Playa Nosara. Steady Northeast trades (NNE-ENE) dominate during these months, blowing cleanly across the swell window and grooming the waves for up to 60% of the time in December and November. Swell is generated by North Pacific storms and frontal systems, delivering consistent 1.0-1.5m waves with periods averaging 11-12s - punchy and fun-sized. While the swell direction is more varied (with some north and east components), the SSW-SW window still produces the best waves, especially when a storm track aligns to send a solid SW groundswell. This is prime time for Nosara's long lefts and playful rights.

Fair Surf Season (May - October)

The green season brings a shift in the swell machine as the Southern Hemisphere winter kicks in. From May through October, the predominant swell direction narrows to a focused SSW-SW band, with wave heights averaging 1.4-1.5m and periods lengthening to 13-14s - powerful, long-period groundswells that wrap into the bay with real authority. However, the wind picture becomes more complex. Lighter winds from variable directions (often SE-SSE cross-shore) reduce the frequency of truly clean conditions, though July stands out with the highest percentage of ideal offshore winds (64%). Early mornings often deliver glassy windows before the afternoon seabreezes kick in, and those who pick their days are rewarded with some of the year's most memorable surf.

Low Surf Season (Transitional Months)

February, March, and September experience the lowest percentages of ideal wind (34-40%) and a weaker mix of swell directions. In late winter, the trades can blow too strong (20-30+ kph) overwhelming the 1.3m swell and creating bumpy, chopped conditions. September, meanwhile, suffers from the highest incidence of onshore south-westerly winds as the Intertropical Convergence Zone sits overhead, often pairing decent SSW long-period swell with bumpy, wind-affected surf. These months require patience and a close eye on the charts to find the narrow windows where the stars align.

December: Festive Swell with a Biting Trade

December sees the trade winds firm up: NE blows 44.5% of the time, many at 20-30 kph, but ideal wind remains high at 59%. Swell is more mixed than earlier months: SSW (31.1%) and SW (18.7%) are still the main players, but northern quadrant swell (NNE 2.9%, NNW 4.8%) returns. Average height stays at 1.3m with period 11.7s. The northeast winds can be strong, but they are offshore - perfect for holding up the wave face. The best days occur when a moderate SSW groundswell coincides with lighter trade winds, providing clean, punchy waves throughout the day.
