Best Surf Season (November - April)

The dry season at Playa Ostional brings a potent mix of consistent, long-period SSW to WSW swell and steady offshore trade winds from the northeast quadrant. From November through April, the North Pacific storm track fires up, sending groundswell pulses across the basin. The average swell height holds in the 1.3-1.5m range with periods often exceeding 12 seconds, delivering punchy, rippable waves. Offshore winds dominate the wind rose, with NE and ENE flows grooming the southwest-facing beach into clean lines. November and December stand out with the highest percentage of ideal wind (61% and 58% respectively), while January through April maintain a solid 40-46% ideal window, despite occasional stronger trade wind pulses. This is prime time for consistent, user-friendly surf.

Fair Surf Season (May - August & October)

As the Intertropical Convergence Zone creeps north, the rainy season sets in and the wind patterns become more variable. During May through August, the swell remains excellent—dominated almost entirely by SSW and SW directions with heights averaging 1.4-1.5m and periods of 13-14 seconds. However, the wind is less reliable. Light onshores and variable breezes become more common, though July and August still see ideal wind percentages of 62% and 51% respectively. October also falls in this category, with a mix of strong SW swell (over 95% from the SW quadrant) but a higher proportion of onshore S and WSW winds. The quality is still there, but you have to pick your days around the wind shifts.

Low Surf Season (September)

September marks the low point of the year for wind conditions. The ideal wind percentage drops to just 37%, the lowest of any month. While the swell remains powerful and consistent (over 95% from SSW/SW at 1.5m average height, 13.1s period), the wind is frequently from the S, SW, and WSW—directly onshore for Playa Ostional. This combination creates swamped, choppy conditions that ruin wave shape. The few good days come when a brief offshore flow from the east or a lull in the onshore winds coincides with a swell pulse, but overall, September is a month to approach with caution or look for alternate spots.

April: Swell Solely From the South

April marks a major shift in the swell direction: a staggering 75.6% of all swell comes from the SSW, and another 13.3% from the SW. This is the peak of the direct SSW swell window for Playa Ostional. The average period jumps again to 14.1 seconds, and wave heights hold at 1.3m on average, with a significant portion reaching 1.5-2m (12.9% from SSW). The wind ideal percentage improves to 46% as the trades moderate—NE winds at 10-20kph occur 10.6% of the time, and ENE at 5.1% in the same speed range. Onshore winds are also present (S 8.5%, SSW 9.9%, SW 7.2%) but often light. The result is a month of incredibly consistent, long-period SSW groundswell. When the wind is light or out of the east, the waves are world-class. The only challenge is the increased frequency of variable onshore flow during the rainy season transition.
