Optimal northerly swell directions (N, NNE, NE, NNW) become more dominant during these months, making up a significant portion of the energy. Summer is the doldrums for Playas del Este. The North Atlantic storm track retreats north, leaving the island exposed to a near-constant easterly trade wind swell generated by the Bermuda-Azores High. Swell heights drop to a meager 0.6-0.8 meters with periods barely reaching 5 seconds—making the surf choppy, low, and often messy. The dominant swell direction is from the east (E and ENE), which battles the beach's north-facing orientation and fails to wrap in with any power. Offshore wind potential plummets to 16-19%, and the prevailing easterly breezes only add to the onshore crumble. The wind rose continues to favor easterly trades, but there's a subtle increase in light offshore breezes (SSW and SW) compared to January. This month often delivers the most consistent surfing conditions of the season because the ocean is still loaded with winter momentum, and the days are longer. Look for those high-pressure ridges that set up a thermal gradient from the interior to the coast, pulling in a light southerly wind in the afternoon. Combined with a 10-second-period N swell, February can produce some fun, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range.
