Best Surf Season (December - February)

The winter months deliver the most consistent combination of solid groundswell and favorable offshore winds. As the North Atlantic winter storm track intensifies, Ponce Inlet sees frequent pulses of NE to E swell averaging 1.2-1.3m with periods around 8-8.4s. Offshore winds from the SW-W quadrant blow clean over 39-44% of the time, grooming the waves into clean, rippable lines. This is the prime window for surfers seeking punchy, fun-sized waves and occasional bigger sets that can push into the 1.5-2m range.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, November)

During these transitional months, the surf remains rideable but less consistent. March still sees a decent 1.2m average and longer period (8.5s), but wind starts to shift onshore more often (38% ideal). April drops slightly to 1.1m and 8.0s, with similar wind conditions. November picks back up to 1.4m average, but onshore northeasterlies become more dominant (29% ideal wind), so you'll have to pick your windows carefully. When it comes together, you can find some fun, punchy surf.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

From late spring through early fall, Ponce Inlet is dominated by small, short-period windswell from the east and southeast. Average heights struggle to hit 1m, with periods often in the 7.6-8.1s range. Although offshore winds from the south and southwest are frequent (especially in summer with 46-55% ideal wind), the wave energy is simply too weak to produce quality surf. The exception is September and October, where tropical cyclones can inject powerful long-period swell, but these events are rare and often accompanied by strong onshore winds. Overall, this is a stretch for groveling boards and dawn patrol sessions on small, weak waves.

September: Hurricane Swell Potential

September sees a sharp jump in average height to 1.2m and period to 8.9s, largely due to tropical cyclones. Dominant swell directions shift to optimal ENE (29.7%) and E (32.6%). However, offshore wind plummets to just 29% ideal, as the Bermuda High locks in onshore easterlies. When a storm passes west of the spot, winds can turn offshore and deliver long-period, powerful waves. It's a high-risk, high-reward month – you have to be ready to pounce.
