While the dominant swell direction is from the northern quadrants (NNW, NW, N), the occasional low pressure system tracking farther south injects the golden angles from SSW through WSW. These months offer fun, rippable surf when a west component sneaks into the mix, and the lighter crowds make it a great time to score.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest period at Ponta do Paul. Average swell heights bottom out at just 1.4-1.5m with periods of 8.5-9.1 seconds, barely nudging into the 'average' category. The swell is overwhelmingly from the north and north-northeast, directions that struggle to wrap effectively into the west-southwest facing corner. On the bright side, the wind is at its most reliable: strong, persistent NE trade winds blow offshore over 45-54% of the time, often creating near-glass conditions. But without decent swell, the waves remain small and groveling. The few fun-sized days come from rare southern hemisphere pulses or local thermal bumps, but overall it is a season for longboarders and beginners.

July: Trade Winds Rule, Swell Falters

July is the smallest month of the year: average swell height bottoms at 1.4m (small, fun-sized) with a period of 8.5s (average, choppy). The swell direction is heavily focused on NNE (38.1%) and NNW (30.6%), with no meaningful west input. However, the wind is a silver lining — ideal 45% of the time, with NNE (47.2%) and NE (27.2%) dominating. These are classic summer trade winds, gusty but consistently offshore. The small swell means mostly groveling conditions with occasional micro-waves that peel slowly. It is a month for longboards, funboards, and learning to appreciate clean but small surf.
