While the dominant swell direction is from the northern quadrants (NNW, NW, N), the occasional low pressure system tracking farther south injects the golden angles from SSW through WSW. When those west swells align with offshore winds from the northeast (NNE, NE, ENE, E), the waves can be truly world-class. However, winter also brings a higher frequency of onshore S to W winds during frontal passages, limiting clean conditions to roughly 40-46% of the time. But without decent swell, the waves remain small and groveling. The few fun-sized days come from rare southern hemisphere pulses or local thermal bumps, but overall it is a season for longboarders and beginners.
