Jardim do Mar is a legendary right-hand point break that peels over a boulder-strewn seafloor, once crowned by Surfer Magazine as the finest big-wave point on the planet. On its best days, this wave delivers heart-stopping drops into long, lightning-fast, and deeply powerful walls that challenge even the most seasoned big-wave chargers. However, the construction of the seawall in 2003 significantly altered the lineup, making those epic sessions far rarer than they once were. When conditions align—with a solid northwest swell, favorable tides, and offshore east winds—the wave still unleashes its classic, freight-train speed, but timing is everything to catch Jardim at its world-class best.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with average swell heights ranging from 2.0m to 2.6m and long-period pulses of 11-13 seconds. While the dominant swell direction remains from the NNW-NW quadrant (over 60% of the time), occasional westerly to southwesterly swells—though only 2-3% of occurrences—can deliver powerful, lined-up waves when they coincide with the persistent NNE to E offshore winds. The combination of strong low-pressure systems tracking south of Greenland and a positive NAO index often funnels solid W-to-NW swell toward Madeira, and Jardins do Mar’s SW exposure can wrap these into clean, rippable walls. Expect frequent pumping conditions from 1.5-2.5m, especially December through February, when the trade wind pattern weakens and wind becomes more variable. Surfers willing to wait for the right window will be rewarded with epic, long-period surf under sunny skies and light offshore breezes.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months see a drop in average swell height to 1.6-2.1m and period to 10-12 seconds, as the Atlantic storm track shifts north. The wind remains favorable (40-57% ideal), predominantly from the NNE-ENE quadrant, offering clean conditions for smaller, more manageable waves. In April, the swell shifts slightly northward with NNW pulses still strong (32%), but occasional W and WNW swells (around 2-8%) can provide fun, rippable surf if the timing is right. September picks up with a higher percentage of ideal wind (57%) and a mix of NW, NNW, and a slight uptick in W swell (2.1%), making it a solid month for consistent, user-friendly waves. While the big winter juice is gone, these months offer more reliable glassy mornings and smaller crowds, perfect for groveling on small days or enjoying punchy 1-1.5m waves when the swell lines up.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer sets in with a significant decrease in both swell height (1.4-1.7m) and period (8.5-10s), dominated by short-period, locally generated north-northeast swell. Over 80% of the swell comes from the N, NNE, and NNW directions, which are far from optimal for the SW-facing beach. While the wind is ideal a solid 39-56% of the time (mostly light offshore from NNE-NE), the waves are often small, weak, and choppy, with heights rarely exceeding 1.5m and periods below 10 seconds. This means mostly micro to small, fun-sized waves (<1m) that require a groveler board. The occasional very rare westerly pulse can liven things up, but the overall pattern is low energy, with the swell direction wrong for the spot. June and July have the lowest average heights (1.5m and 1.4m) and periods (9.3s and 8.5s), respectively. This is the season for beginner lessons, longboard cruising, or just enjoying the summer vibes—but don’t expect any heavy, pumping surf.
