Popov Island, Russia, offers a relatively challenging surf environment with limited ideal conditions throughout the year. The swell is predominantly wind-driven, with ground swells being nearly nonexistent (only 1% in January and September). The best chances for surfable waves occur from May to August, particularly in August, which has the highest wind swell probability (54%) and the largest mean swell size (0.6m). However, wind conditions are generally poor, with over 90% of days experiencing unfavorable onshore or strong winds in most months. The least promising period is winter (January–March), where no-swell days dominate (80–86%) and swell size is minimal (0.3–0.4m). Spring (April–June) and late summer (August) show slightly improved wave activity, but even then, good wind conditions remain rare (below 10%). Surfers should prioritize August for marginally better wave potential, though consistent clean conditions are unlikely. Overall, Popov Island is not a high-performance surf destination, requiring patience and flexibility to score rideable waves, especially during late summer when wind swells peak.
