Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months bring the most consistent swell to Popov Island, driven by the strengthening Siberian High and the deepening Aleutian Low. These pressure systems generate strong northerly and northwesterly winds that blow directly offshore, grooming the waves into clean, punchy lines. With an average swell height hovering around 0.8-0.9m and periods of 5.0s, the waves are small but fun-sized to solid, and the offshore wind window peaks at 17-21%. The cooler sea surface temperatures also help stabilize the atmosphere, reducing onshore flow from the south and southwest. This is the prime window for scoring rideable, rippable surf in a beautiful, uncrowded setting.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September act as transition months, offering a mix of fading winter patterns and emerging summer regimes. Swell heights drop to an average of 0.5-0.6m, and the ideal wind frequency falls to 10-16%. Still, occasional late-season cold fronts can deliver short-period N-NW pulses that break cleanly with offshore winds. The window is narrow, but those who chase the charts can find small, fun-sized waves before the summer doldrums or after the autumn transition begins.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, the synoptic pattern shifts dramatically. The Aleutian Low weakens and the Siberian High retreats, allowing the Pacific subtropical ridge to dominate. Swell direction rotates to a persistent S-SSE component, which hits the island with onshore wind from the same quarter. Wave heights average only 0.5m, with periods below 5.5s, producing micro, groveling conditions. Offshore wind remains scarce at 5-12%. This is the true low season; only the most dedicated shortboarders or longboarders will find the occasional tiny, clean morning session. Plan your trip elsewhere or bring a foam board.

December: Winter Peak, Clean & Cold

December delivers peak winter conditions with average swell of 0.8m and ideal wind 19%. NNW swells account for 37.6% of the total, with N adding another 12.9%. These directions work perfectly with the dominant N-NNW offshore winds (totaling 53.5% of wind observations). Wave heights in the 0.5-1.5m range are common, and the cold airmass ensures stable, laminar offshore flow. Long-period pulses from the NW are rare but possible. When they align – typically during a strong Aleutian Low and a tight pressure gradient across the Sea of Japan – you can score clean, shoulder-high waves with light offshores. December is prime time, but be prepared for frigid air and water temps.
