Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of winter delivers the most consistent and powerful surf at Port Mary. From October through March, the North Atlantic storm track fires up, sending long-period groundswells from the S, SSW, and SW straight into this southwest-facing beach. Average swell heights range from 2.5m to a peak of 3.0m in December, with periods often hitting the 11-12s mark – that's powerful, long-period energy that wraps in cleanly. Offshore winds from the N, NNE, NE, and ENE blow 28-37% of the time, grooming the faces for peaky, rippable walls. This is when Port Mary lives up to its reputation as a winter gem.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the seasons transition, the surf becomes more mixed but still offers plenty of fun sessions. April and May see average swell heights drop to 1.7-2.2m, but the period remains solid around 10-10.8s, and ideal wind percentages hold steady near 31-38%. The dominant swell directions stay in the optimal S-SW window, though we see more smaller, punchier waves perfect for groveling. September marks the return of autumn energy, with swell building back up to 2.0m and periods around 9.9s. However, onshore winds from the south become common, with ideal wind dropping to 26% – so you'll need to pick your windows carefully. These months reward patience and a flexible schedule.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in and so does a frustrating pattern of small, onshore-chopped surf. From June through August, average swell heights hover at a paltry 1.3-1.4m with periods barely above 10s. The wind turns unfavorable, with offshore flow from the N-NE quadrants occurring only 20-26% of the time. Instead, sea breezes and trade winds from the S and SW dominate, creating bumpy, weak conditions. While a stray south pulse might produce a fun-sized 1m wave, the majority of days are small and messy. This is a good time to explore other breaks or focus on equipment maintenance – Port Mary is a sleep-in month.

August: A Glimmer of Hope

August remains small, with an average height of 1.4m and period 9.8s, but there are signs of life. Swell direction is heavily concentrated in the SW and WSW (60.7% combined), with a slight uptick in height distribution toward 1-1.5m and 1.5-2m compared to July. Wind quality improves marginally to 25% ideal offshore, with more ENE and E breezes (2.6% and 2.3% respectively) light enough to groom the surface. The longer days mean more chance for a glass-off session if a south swell pulse arrives. August is the start of the climb back to quality – keep an eye on long-range forecast.
