Best Surf Season (May - August)

The South Atlantic winter unleashes its fury during these months, and Praia da Macumba stands tall to receive the onslaught. Average swell heights climb to a consistent 1.2-1.3m with periods stretching into the 10.8-11.1s range - that's punchy, long-period groundswell from the S, SSE and SSW quadrants. Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer in the southern hemisphere brings a lull in South Atlantic storm activity. Average swell heights hover around 0.9-1.0m with periods of 9.6-9.9s - mostly small, groveling waves from the SE and SSE. Offshore wind frequencies are moderate (37-51%) but the lack of size and power means the surf is often marginal. While occasional pulses of longer-period swell can ride through, expect mostly whitewash and weak conditions during these months.

January: Summer Slumber

January is the deep of the Brazilian summer, and the surf is sluggish. Average swell height is a mere 0.9m with a period of 9.6s - mostly small, fun-sized waves (<1.5m). The dominant swell directions are SSE (28.7%) and S (27.9%), but 75% of waves are under 1m, so expect soft, rolling lines rather than punchy barrels. Wind is ideal only 47% of the time; the trade wind regime brings frequent ENE (11.8%) and NE (11.2%) breezes that are cross-shore to slightly onshore. When the wind does clock around to N or NNE (16.9% combined), conditions improve, but overall, the month struggles to deliver quality surf.
