Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles in with a persistent deep Azores High dominating the weather pattern. Swell energy drops dramatically to 0.9-1.1m on average, with shorter periods of 8.8-9.9s. The swell direction swings more NW, producing weaker, less consistent waves. Ideal offshore wind is present only 33-36% of the time, and the prevailing northerly winds (NNW/N) often create bumpy, onshore conditions. While you'll find the occasional fun-sized day, expect groveling conditions and smaller, weaker surf. Best for beginners or taking a break.

April: The Calm Before Summer

April sees a notable drop in energy – average swell height falls to 1.3m and period to 10.9s. Dominant swell directions are WNW (43.7%) and NW (26.2%), with W (18.5%) still providing some direct swell. Ideal wind is present only 37% of the time, a significant decline from winter. The best offshore winds come from NNW (15.9%) and N (11.4%), but lighter speeds dominate. Wave heights are mostly in the 0.5-1.5m range, with occasional 1.5-2m sets from W. This is a transitional month where the powerful winter storms are replaced by weaker lows and ridges.
