Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter machine is in full swing, delivering a relentless pulse of powerful, long-period swell to Prainha's west-facing shores. Average wave heights sit consistently between 2.5m and 2.8m with periods averaging 12-13s, meaning clean, lined-up waves are the norm. Offshore winds from the NO (NW) to OSO (WSW) quadrant occur 37-44% of the time, often aligning with passing cold fronts and post-frontal high-pressure ridges. This is the prime window for epic sessions – expect heavy, grinding barrels and long walls when a solid W or WNW swell meets light easterly morning wind.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the atmosphere transitions, the power dials back a notch but quality remains high on the right days. April and May see average heights drop to 1.8-2.1m with periods around 10-11s, while September sees a sharp uptick in swell activity as early autumn storms begin to spin up. Wind consistency improves, with ideal offshore conditions occurring 24-31% of the time. These shoulder months often deliver the best combination of manageable size, lighter winds, and uncrowded lineups – perfect for carving up fun, rippable walls without the winter crowds.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer sets in with a persistent northerly wind regime that keeps the ocean ragged and the swell small. Average wave heights hover around 1.5-1.6m, and periods drop to 8-9s, leaving the waves weak and choppy. The dominant N and NNW winds blow 30-35% of the time, creating onshore conditions that kill the wave quality. While the rare S-SW groundswell can sneak in, it’s typically small and short-lived. This is the time for groveling on a longboard or chasing wind protection; the magic of Prainha’s winter power is on hold until the autumn equinox signals the return of the North Atlantic.

December: Winter's Full Force

December delivers the final installment of the winter trilogy with average swell height of 2.7m and period of 12.8s – heavy, powerful waves. Swell direction is dominated by NW (18.6%), WNW (13.2%), and NNW (10.4%), with W (5.5%) and WSW (2.7%) adding variety. Notably, the east-southeast quadrant (E, ESE, SE) contributes a surprising 11.0% of swell – likely from distant storms in the Mediterranean or Bay of Biscay, but these are usually small. Ideal wind conditions are 43%, the second best of the year. North winds (11.7%) and NNE (7.7%) are lighter than mid-winter, while the east quadrant winds (E, ESE, SE) total 26.2% – many of these are light (0-10kph) and create pristine, glassy conditions. The combination of large, long-period swell and clean offshore wind is frequent in December. This is a month for serious surfers – expect XL days and heavy barrels. Prainha at its best.
