Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months deliver the largest and most consistent swell of the year, but it's a double-edged sword for Punta Chipehua. Dominant wind regimes shift onshore from the north and northeast over 50% of the time, frequently messing up the wave face. The few gems come when a strong, long-period groundswell from the NNE (averaging 10-11s period, 1.4m height) aligns with a rare offshore window from the SW or WSW. This combo can produce punchy, lined-up waves on the better days, but you'll need patience and a keen eye on the forecast.

Fair Surf Season (April - June)

Spring sees a dramatic increase in ideal wind frequency, with offshore flow from the SW/W blowing up to 50% of the time in May. Swell heights remain consistent at 1.4-1.5m, and period jumps to a powerful 13-14s. The catch? Swell direction shifts almost entirely to S and SSW – which is far from optimal for this east-northeast facing beach. The result is typically a cleaner, but weaker and more sectiony wave that needs a grovel board. It's a time for small-wave specialists to enjoy mellow, clean conditions.

Low Surf Season (July - September)

Summer brings the worst of both worlds for Punta Chipehua. Swell continues from the south, but the wind patterns turn very unfavourable. Ideal offshore wind drops to just 18-25%, while onshore northerlies strengthen and dominate. The wave quality suffers from constant bump and chop, making it the most challenging season for catching anything decent. Persistent tropical heat and light land breezes can occasionally offer clean, small windows, but overall it's a quiet period best spent exploring other activities.

April: Spring Cleanup, but Direction Struggles

Spring conditions reach a sweet spot for wind. Offshore flow from SW-WSW blows 46% of the time, giving many mornings of flat, glassy water. The average swell period is a very long 13.7s – true groundswell energy. Yet 82% of the swell now comes from the S and SSW, directions that hit the coast at an oblique angle. The resulting waves are often smaller than the buoy suggests, typically in the fun-sized (0.5-1m) to solid (1-1.5m) range. They peel cleanly but without much power. It's a great time for beginners or longboarders to enjoy the clean, user-friendly waves.
