Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months deliver the largest and most consistent swell of the year, but it's a double-edged sword for Punta Chipehua. Dominant wind regimes shift onshore from the north and northeast over 50% of the time, frequently messing up the wave face. The few gems come when a strong, long-period groundswell from the NNE (averaging 10-11s period, 1.4m height) aligns with a rare offshore window from the SW or WSW. This combo can produce punchy, lined-up waves on the better days, but you'll need patience and a keen eye on the forecast.

Fair Surf Season (April - June)

Spring sees a dramatic increase in ideal wind frequency, with offshore flow from the SW/W blowing up to 50% of the time in May. Swell heights remain consistent at 1.4-1.5m, and period jumps to a powerful 13-14s. The catch? Swell direction shifts almost entirely to S and SSW – which is far from optimal for this east-northeast facing beach. The result is typically a cleaner, but weaker and more sectiony wave that needs a grovel board. It's a time for small-wave specialists to enjoy mellow, clean conditions.

Low Surf Season (July - September)

Summer brings the worst of both worlds for Punta Chipehua. Swell continues from the south, but the wind patterns turn very unfavourable. Ideal offshore wind drops to just 18-25%, while onshore northerlies strengthen and dominate. The wave quality suffers from constant bump and chop, making it the most challenging season for catching anything decent. Persistent tropical heat and light land breezes can occasionally offer clean, small windows, but overall it's a quiet period best spent exploring other activities.

February: Building Period, Consistent Swell

Wave period climbs to a solid 11.3s, indicating more long-period groundswell. Swell height holds at 1.4m, with the NNE (20%) and S/SSW (51% combined) dominating the spectrum. Wind patterns are similar to January, with N winds still strong at 41%, but ideal offshore (SW-W) increases slightly to 28%. The potential for a clean session improves when a high-pressure ridge sets up, producing lighter westerly winds. On those rare days, the NNE swell wraps in with clean lines, offering fun, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range. Still, the majority of days will be blown out.
