Best Surf Season (June - September)

During the summer months, the Azores High pressure system settles over the region, delivering dominant north to northeast trade winds. For Ribeira Quente's SSE-facing beach, this means consistent offshore flow that grooms the swell into clean, lined-up waves. While the average surf height drops to the 1.2-1.4m range and periods linger around 9-9.5 seconds, the quality often surpasses the bigger winter surf due to the absence of onshore wind. Long-period south swells from distant Southern Ocean storms occasionally reach the island, bringing powerful, well-defined walls. This is the window for fun, rippable waves with plenty of shoulder to work with.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, October, November)

These transitional months see a mix of the two regimes. The wind is often lighter and more variable, offering adequate offshore windows alongside occasional onshore slop. Swell heights average between 1.7-2.3m with periods increasing to 10-11 seconds, indicating more powerful groundswell. However, the dominant swell direction remains from the north and northwest, which does not ideally align with Ribeira Quente's exposure. When a rare south or southeast component mixes in under clear skies, the waves can become excellent. It's a gamble, but the reward is a chance for empty, pristine surf.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

Winter unleashes the full force of the North Atlantic with average swell heights exceeding 2.5m and periods over 12 seconds. Unfortunately, for Ribeira Quente, this energy usually arrives from unfavorable northerly directions (NW–NNW) that are blocked or poorly aligned by the island's geography. Furthermore, the dominant wind pattern shifts to southwesterly (onshore), chopping up what little swell makes it through. The percentage of ideal surfing wind drops below 30%, and the onshore breezes create messy, blown-out conditions. While the occasional long-period south swell can slip through and deliver thrilling, heavy waves, these events are rare and fleeting. For consistent quality, this is the quietest time of the year.

January: North Atlantic Fury, Wrong Direction

January delivers the highest average swell of the year at 2.7m with a long period of 12.3 seconds. However, the vast majority of this energy arrives from the northwest quadrant (NW, WNW, NNW), which does not align with Ribeira Quente's SSE exposure. The optimal swell directions of S, SSW, SSE, and SE collectively make up less than 3% of all swell. To make matters worse, onshore winds from WSW–SSW dominate, with ideal offshore wind from the north only occurring 24% of the time. The result is a month of big, messy surf – rarely clean. The few south swells that appear can be powerful and heavy, but they are brief and far between.
