Best Surf Season (April - July)

During the austral autumn and winter, the South Atlantic roars to life as a series of strong cold fronts and extratropical cyclones march eastward, generating long-period swell that makes its way to the SE-facing shores of Rincao. While the dominant swell direction remains from the E-ESE quadrant, the combination of higher average wave periods (9.4 to 10.0 seconds) and an increased frequency of offshore winds from the west and northwest creates the most favorable surf conditions of the year. Offshore wind percentages peak at 46% in both May and June, offering the best chance of clean, groomed waves. The average swell height sits around 1.5-1.6m, providing fun to solid surf, with occasional larger pulses from the south tapping into the 1.5-2.5m range. This is the prime window for Rincao.

Fair Surf Season (March & August)

March and August serve as transitional months, offering a mix of building or declining swell activity. March sees the tail end of summer patterns with offshore winds at 36% and an average period of 9.1s, while August still holds onto winter energy with a similar 36% offshore wind but a slightly lower average period of 9.5s. Swell heights remain solid around 1.4-1.6m, and although the wind consistency is lower than the peak months, there are plenty of rideable days, especially when cold fronts align with a westerly wind shift. It's a good bet for intermediate surfers looking to avoid the crowds.

Low Surf Season (September - February)

The austral spring and summer months bring a marked decline in surf quality to Rincao. The South Atlantic high pressure system dominates, resulting in lighter and more variable winds, but the prevailing flow is from the northeast and east — onshore for this SE-facing break. Offshore wind percentages drop to 21-28%, meaning clean conditions are rare. Swell periods average between 8.4 and 9.1 seconds, producing weaker, more disorganized waves. While average heights remain in the 1.3-1.7m range, the combination of onshore winds and less powerful swell makes for mostly choppy, messy surf. Occasional tropical systems or distant storms can provide isolated windows of quality, but consistency is low. This is the time to explore other breaks or enjoy the beach life.

January: Summer Doldrums

January delivers the classic summer pattern at Rincao. The South Atlantic subtropical high sits firmly offshore, driving persistent easterly trade winds that blow directly onshore (NE and ENE directions account for over 35% of all wind observations). Ideal offshore wind from the west or northwest is present only 28% of the time, making clean waves a rare commodity. Swell is dominated by short to mid-period (avg 8.4s) pulses from the east and southeast, with average height around 1.3m. The combination of onshore wind and relatively weak, disorganized swell results in mostly choppy, groveling conditions. While the water is warm and the vibe is relaxed, surf quality is generally low — best suited for longboards and fun shapes on the rare glassy morning.
