Low Surf Season (May - August)

The dominant swell direction is NW, but wave heights are small, and the period is short, resulting in weak, mushy waves. Onshore and cross-shore winds become more prevalent, with ideal wind frequencies dropping to 11-23%. The prevailing northerly and northwesterly winds (NNW, N, NW) often produce choppy conditions. The Azores High strengthens, diverting storm tracks away from the region. Wave heights are predominantly in the 0.5-1.5m range, but there is a noticeable increase in 1.5-2m waves compared to summer months. Ideal wind frequency jumps to 28%, as the weather patterns become more changeable. The Azores High starts to shift, allowing early autumn storms to generate swell. Easterly winds from the ENE, E, and ESE become more common, providing clean, glassy conditions. This is a promising month for intermediate surfers, with consistent waist-to-chest-high waves and occasional head-high sets.
