Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with strong extratropical storms churning up consistent, powerful swell. Average wave heights hover between 1.9m and 2.5m, with periods often exceeding 12 seconds — bringing solid, long-period groundswell. While the dominant swell direction is from the NW and WNW — not ideal for Santo Amaro's SSE-facing orientation — the beach still picks up plenty of wrap-around energy from the west and southwest. The real magic happens when a deep low pressure system tracks south of the Azores, sending SW to WSW swell directly into the bay. Combine that with a high-pressure ridge to the north delivering offshore N to NW winds, and you get clean, groomed lines that make the crowd at the point light up. However, the wind is ideal only 37-51% of the time, so patience and constant forecast checking are key. Overall, this is when Santo Amaro can produce its most consistent and powerful surf.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the storm track shifts northward, the Atlantic begins to settle down, but there's still enough juice in the water to keep things interesting. April and May see average swell heights drop to 1.6-1.9m with periods around 10-11 seconds — fun, rippable waves but lacking the power of winter. The wind is more favorable overall, with ideal conditions around 47-56% of the time, thanks to the strengthening Azores High that pumps in a steady N to NNW breeze. September is a standout month: the ocean is still warm from summer, and the first autumn storms start to kick up long-period swell from the west and southwest. The ideal wind percentage peaks at 56%, making it a prime time for clean, glassy sessions. Swell from optimal directions (SW, SSW, S) becomes slightly more frequent, so when the conditions align, you can score excellent waves without the winter crowds.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quiet period at Santo Amaro. The North Atlantic storm belt retreats to high latitudes, leaving the region under the influence of the Azores High. Swell heights average just 1.3-1.4m with periods of 8-9 seconds — mostly short-period windswell and small groundswell. The dominant swell direction becomes almost exclusively NW to NNW, which is far from ideal for the SSE-facing beach; the waves that do arrive are often weak, choppy, and plagued by onshore winds from the south and southwest. While the constant N to NW wind (offshore) blows around 44-48% of the time, the lack of swell energy means it's often just small, clean conditions suited for longboarders and beginners. The mix of small swell and summer sea breezes rarely delivers quality waves, but occasional S or SW swell from distant tropical systems can provide a fun, if brief, respite.

May: Fun-sized and Clean

May continues the trend of smaller surf as the Atlantic storm track shifts north. Average swell height is 1.6m with a period of 9.9 seconds — now entering average, punchy territory. Swell direction is overwhelmingly NW (35.6%) and NNW (23.8%), with WNW (20.1%) also prominent. Optimal swell directions are virtually non-existent (0.4% total from SSW and SW), so the spot is completely reliant on wrap-around and refracted NW swell. The wind remains favorable, with ideal conditions 47% of the time. N wind (20.6%) and NNW (25.8%) are dominant, often blowing at 10-20kph, providing clean, offshore texture. Wave heights are mostly in the 1-1.5m range (fun-sized), with some 1.5-2m sets on the better days. The period around 10 seconds gives the waves some punch, but they're far from the powerful winter barrels. May is perfect for catching a wave on a longboard or a quad fin, enjoying the sun, and logging miles in the water without the winter crowds.
