Best Surf Season (December - March)

When the Australian monsoon retreats and the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts south, Sanur enters its prime window. From December through March, the prevailing wind pattern shifts to a dominant westerly flow, bringing clean offshore breezes (SW, WSW, W, WNW) that groom the swell into crisp, long-period lines. The average wave period hovers around 12-13 seconds, delivering powerful, rippable waves in the 1-2m range. This is when the magic happens: the Indian Ocean storm track fires up, sending consistent SSW/SW groundswell that wraps around the southern tip of Bali and arrives with serious push. Expect 55-63% offshore wind frequency, making these months the most reliable for quality surf at Sanur.

Fair Surf Season (October - November & April)

October and November mark the transition from the dry southeast monsoon to the wet northwest monsoon. The offshore wind window starts to open, with ideal conditions occurring 22-38% of the time. Swell heights average 1.6-1.8m with long periods (12.8-13.5s), but the wind can be fickle – a mix of light sea breezes and early westerly onslaughts. April is similar on the tail end of the wet season, with 19% offshore but a strong shift to cross-shore trades. These months require a keen eye on the forecast, but when the alignment hits – a strong storm in the Southern Ocean and a westerly wind regime – you can score pumping, long-period surf under sunny skies.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

The southeast trade winds dominate from May through September, bringing relentless onshore winds from the E-ESE-SE that destroy wave quality. Offshore wind frequency plummets to 1-7% – nearly non-existent. The swell is there, though: the average height actually peaks at 2.0-2.2m with periods over 14 seconds, thanks to persistent Southern Ocean storms. But those beautiful long-period groundswells are accompanied by brutal, choppy winds that turn the lineup into a washing machine. Expect wind swell and messy conditions. Only the occasional lull in the trades or a rare westerly wind event can offer brief windows of rideable surf. This is the time to explore other breaks or wait for the monsoon shift.

July: Dry Season Deep Freeze – Wind Dominates

July continues the dry season stranglehold with just 1% offshore conditions. The wind is overwhelmingly from ESE (59.7%) and SE (29.7%), often 20-40kph – relentless onshore flow. Swell heights average 2.2m at 14.2s, the highest and longest of the year. Swell comes from S (33.3%) and SSW (35.2%), with a significant portion exceeding 2.5m (1% from SSW, and 18.5% from S in the 2-2.5m range). These are pumping, heavy waves with massive potential. However, the wind direction shreds the wave quality – expect bumpy, choppy surfaces and difficult takeoffs. The rare westerly wind day (almost non-existent) would be an all-time session, but July is mostly a write-off for Sanur. Surfers must seek shelter on the west coast or wait for a lull in the trades.
