The most consistent windows of quality surf at Sassandra unfold from March through May. During this period, the South Atlantic Ocean fires up with a steady stream of long-period groundswell, as powerful storms tracking south of the continent generate waves that radiate northwards towards the Ivory Coast. Average swell heights climb from 1.2m in March to 1.5m in May, with periods lengthening into the 11-12 second range — solid, punchy lines that wrap into the southeast-facing beach. Critically, the wind regime is still favorable, with offshore flow from the west through northwest quadrant dominating over 50% of the time in March and April. This is the sweet spot: the days when a strong SW swell coincides with a light W to NW breeze produce clean, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range, perfect for carving.

Fair Surf Season (June - September & October - February)

From June to September, the swell machine is in overdrive, with average heights pushing 1.6m and periods consistently exceeding 12 seconds. This is the heart of the South Atlantic storm track, and the potential for pumping swell is high. However, the trade wind inversion strengthens, and the dominant wind flow shifts to the SW and WSW — directly onshore at Sassandra. The result is a classic fair-weather dilemma: plenty of power, but often blown out by side-onshore winds. Ideal wind percentages drop to the low 40s, so you have to be selective, waiting for a brief NW breeze or a morning lull to snag a clean set. Conversely, October through February sees a gradual decline in swell energy, with averages dipping back to 1.1-1.3m. Wind patterns become more variable, with a higher frequency of offshore directions (WNW, NW) during the winter months. This makes for a fair season of smaller but more rideable waves, especially for those on smaller boards who can exploit the 0.5-1.5m fun-sized conditions.

Low Surf Season (November)

November stands out as the most challenging month for surf consistency at Sassandra. Average swell height holds at a modest 1.2m and the period dips to 10.9s — rideable but lacking the power of winter or the size of summer. The real culprit is the wind: only 36% of the time does the breeze blow from an ideal offshore direction. The prevailing flow is a messy mix of SSE through SW, often accompanied by light onshore winds that chop up what little swell arrives. While there are still occasional windows — typically when a cold front pushes through and a brief NW wind cleans things up — November is generally a month to manage expectations and keep an eye on the longer-range forecasts for that rare combination of SW groundswell and offshore flow.

December: End of Year, Small Swell, Occasional Windows

December winds down the year with the smallest average swell of the cycle at 1.1m and a period of 10.5s. The swell direction is heavily weighted towards S (85.6%) with SSE (9.4%) and SSW (5.0%). The wave heights are concentrated in the 0.5-1.5m range, with a lot of days in the small, groveling category. Wind conditions are more favorable than November but still challenging: ideal wind 43% of the time. The offshore flow picks up from the W (7.2%), WNW (3.4%), NW (1.4%), and NNW (0.7%). However, the onshore directions still dominate, especially from SW (18.1%) and SSW (17.9%). December offers a mixed bag: the swell is consistent but small, and the wind often has a clean morning window before the sea breeze kicks in. For those on longboards or grovelers, the 0.5-1m waves can be a lot of fun when the NW wind cleans them up. It's a good month for beginners and those looking to escape the wind of the summer months.
