Sebastian Inlet seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The peak of the winter season delivers the most reliable combination of swell and offshore wind. As high-pressure systems frequently park over the eastern US, the resulting pressure gradient funnels consistent ENE to E swell into the inlet. Offshore winds from the SSW to W quadrant are most prevalent during this period, with January and February boasting ideal wind percentages above 30%. Average wave heights hover in the 0.8m to 0.9m range with periods around 8-9 seconds – enough to produce punchy, rideable waves on the better sandbars. While not always pumping, the frequency of clean conditions makes this the prime window for Sebastian Inlet.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, October, November)

Transitional months bring a mix of opportunities and challenges. April and May see a gradual shift toward summer patterns, with decreasing swell heights and a rising influence of easterly trade winds that often blow onshore. However, occasional late-season cold fronts can still deliver a burst of NE swell with light offshore winds. October and November are the start of the ramp-up, as the Atlantic hurricane season and early winter storms begin to fire. Swell heights climb back to the 0.9m to 1.0m range, and periods lengthen, but the wind becomes less reliable – ideal offshore winds drop to around 17-23%. Still, savvy surfers can score clean fun-sized waves when a strong low pressure aligns with a high-pressure wedge bringing westernly flow.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer is a waiting game at Sebastian Inlet. The persistent easterly trade winds blow onshore for the majority of the time, ruining wave quality. Swell heights average a meager 0.5m to 0.6m with periods around 8 seconds, producing mostly small, choppy conditions. The wind is ideal for surfing only 13-18% of the time, usually during brief periods of light westerly flow in the early morning. While the occasional tropical storm or hurricane can produce a few days of firing surf if it tracks just right, such events are rare and unpredictable. For consistent quality waves, it's best to look elsewhere during these months.

Conditions at Sebastian Inlet in November

November: Prime Time Arrives

November is the beginning of the best stretch for surf at Sebastian Inlet. Average swell height climbs to 1.0m, period holds at 8.6s, and ideal wind improves to 23%. Swell direction is excellent: ENE (31.1%), E (24.4%), NE (19.4%), and NNE (8.8%). Importantly, there is a significant percentage of waves in the 1-1.5m range (ENE 8.9%, NE 6.2%) and even 1.5-2m (ENE 2.9%, NE 1.5%) and 2-2.5m (ENE 1.1%). This means solid pumping conditions are possible when the right front passes. Wind patterns are more favorable than in October: onshore winds from NE and ENE still dominate (totaling 22.6%), but offshore winds from the SW-W increase to about 11.5%. The frequency of strong cold fronts dragging across Florida increases, bringing W-SW offshore flow that cleans up the abundant east swell. November often delivers multiple days of firing, shoulder-to-head-high waves with clean faces, making it a prime month for experienced surfers.
