Best Surf Season (December - February)

This is the peak window at Serangan, driven by the northwest monsoon. Consistent offshore winds from the west and northwest deliver clean, groomed conditions 60-64% of the time. While the dominant swell comes from the SSW and SW—not the ideal E-SSE direction—the offshore flow transforms these long-period Southern Ocean groundswells into smooth, rippable waves. Expect average wave heights around 1.6-1.7m with periods of 12-13s, offering fun to pumping surf day after day.

Fair Surf Season (March & November)

These months represent the transition between monsoons. March still sees moderate offshore wind (48% ideal) with powerful 13.3s swell, but the trade winds begin to creep in. November marks the return of the monsoon with 31% ideal wind, after months of onshore slop. Wave heights average 1.6m, and while the swell direction remains south-oriented, the improving wind quality makes these months solid secondary targets.

Low Surf Season (April - October)

The southeast trade winds dominate from April through October, blowing directly onshore from the E-ESE-SE quadrant. Ideal wind plummets to 19% in April and further down to 0-3% from May through August. Although swell energy peaks during these months—averaging 1.9-2.2m with long periods over 14s from the deep south—the constant onshore wind wrecks wave quality, creating lumpy, choppy, and difficult conditions. Only rare light-wind windows or early mornings offer any refuge. September and October see a slight uptick in wind quality (3-13%), but conditions remain marginal.

May: Cruel Trade Winds and Southern Swell

May is the cruelest month at Serangan. Ideal wind drops to a mere 3% as the southeast trades howl at 10-30kph from the ESE (57.3%) and SE (18.7%). Swell averages 1.9m at a long 14.1s, with significant energy from SSW (44.8%), S (31.0%), and even SSE (11.4%). The groundswell is there—big, powerful—but the onshore wind reduces it to lumpy, difficult conditions. A few early mornings with lighter winds can produce short-lived goodness.
