Best Surf Season (March - May & September - November)

The heart of the Southern Ocean's fury aligns with favorable wind patterns during these shoulder months, delivering the most consistent quality at Shark Rock Pier. In autumn (March-May), the South Atlantic high pressure ridge begins to weaken, allowing strong westerly storm tracks to fire up the swell window from the SSW and SW. Meanwhile, the frequency of coastal lows brings spells of offshore breeze from the WSW and SW, cleaning up the lines. Spring (September-November) sees a similar balance: the ocean is still ramped up after winter, with long-period groundswells marching in from the southwest, and the dreaded onshore easterly trade winds are less dominant. While the average swell height hovers around 2.0–2.3m with periods of 11–12s, it's the combination of these solid swells and clean offshore winds that makes this the prime window.

Fair Surf Season (December - February & June - August)

Summer (December-February) offers the highest percentage of ideal offshore wind (28%), thanks to a persistent high pressure system that pumps southerly airflows. Swell is smaller though, averaging 1.9–2.0m and 10.7–11.0s, providing fun, rippable waves that are best suited for performance surfing when the SSW swell bumps up. On the flip side, winter (June-August) brings the Big Swell season: the Southern Ocean roars with consecutive extratropical storms, producing powerful 2.3–2.4m swells with periods of 12.2–12.5s. However, the trade-off is a spike in onshore winds from the NE to ENE, which often chops up the surface. That said, the raw power and long-period energy still draw crowds when the wind cooperates.

Low Surf Season

There isn't a true low season at Shark Rock Pier, but the months of June and July represent the most challenging period due to prevailing onshore winds from the north and northeast. Despite the massive swell in the water, the quality is frequently compromised by bumpy, wind-affected conditions. The ideal wind percentage drops to 17–19%, meaning many days are unsurfable. However, the odd cold front passage can swing the wind around to the WSW, transforming the same big swell into pumping, world-class waves for a short window.
