Best Surf Season (October - March)

As the autumn deepens and the winter solstice approaches, Star Tubes comes alive with the most consistent and powerful surf of the year. From October through March, the average swell height climbs from 1.7m in October to a peak of 2.2m in December, driven by the steady pulse of North Pacific swell trains. The average wave period hovers around 7.5–8.0 seconds, producing punchy, rideable waves—perfect for this WNW-facing reef. The northeast trade winds dominate, but when they ease and shift to a more easterly direction (E, ESE, SE, SSE), the offshore flow cleans up the faces and creates the classic glassy conditions that make this spot truly shine. Ideal wind percentages range from 42% to 57%, peaking in October. This is the time to lock in your sessions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September mark the transitional windows when the surf is less consistent but far from flat. In April, average swell height drops to 0.9m with a period of 7.0s, and ideal wind sits at only 33%, as the trades weaken and variable winds creep in. September, however, offers a glimmer of hope: a solid 1.2m average swell, a 7.5s period, and a 53% ideal wind rate—thanks to a mix of north and south swells that occasionally align. These months require patience and a keen eye on the charts, but when the right combo of a long-period NW swell and light easterly winds arrives, it can still deliver memorable sessions.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, Star Tubes experiences its slowest period. The average swell height bottoms out at 0.7m in May before slowly rebuilding to 1.3m in August, but the dominant swell direction swings to the southwest (SW and SSW), which is far from ideal for this WNW-oriented reef. Wave periods are shorter (6.5–7.4s), often resulting in messy, choppy conditions. Meanwhile, the wind regime shifts to southerly and southwesterly flows (S, SSW) that blow onshore or cross-shore, further degrading wave quality. Ideal wind percentages hover around 37–46%, but the combination of poor swell angle and onshore winds makes for mostly groveling or micro surf. That said, occasional tropical disturbances and cyclones can spin up short-period pulses from the west, offering brief windows of fun—if you're willing to take the risk.

December: The Apex of Swell Energy

December delivers the highest average swell height of the year: 2.2m, with a period of 8.0s. The swell is firmly locked into the NNE (38%) and NE (27.4%), with a few north pulses (N 3.1%). The trade winds are at their strongest, with NE (40%) and ENE (31.3%) winds often blowing 20–30kph. Ideal wind percentage drops slightly to 42%, as the stronger trades can create lumpy conditions. However, the raw power is undeniable—waves frequently range from pumping 1.5–2.5m to XL 2.5m+ sets. Pick your windows carefully: early mornings with lighter winds will reward you with some of the heaviest, most epic surf of the year.
