Storms tracking across the Southern Ocean send consistent SW swell towards the NW-facing coast, while high-pressure systems stall offshore and deliver clean, glassy conditions. This is the sweet spot: solid, rippable waves with light winds from the S to SW quadrant. Expect plenty of 1.5-2.5m sets that barrel down the reef.

Winter roars with maximum energy—average swell heights hit 2.6-2.8m and periods hover around 13s, signaling powerful groundswell. The Southern Ocean is a storm factory, churning out XL swells (some exceeding 2.5m) that wrap into the bay. However, the trade-off comes in the form of less reliable offshore winds, with ideal conditions dropping to just 17-18% of the time in mid-winter. Frequent frontal passages bring gusty NW to SW winds, often mixing up the faces. Spring offers a gradual improvement: by October, the wind cleans up (21% ideal) and swell sizes remain solid at 2.2m. September through November provide a good mix of size and occasional windows of perfection, but you'll need to pick your days carefully.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Summer settles over the region, and the swell machine winds down. Averages dip to 1.8-1.9m, with periods still respectable at 11.8-11.9s (mostly due to distant storm remnants). The dominant swell direction stays in the SW quadrant, but the energy is less consistent. Light offshore breezes from the S to SSE quadrant occur around 17-18% of the time—similar to mid-winter but with much smaller wave heights. The result is a lot of days with fun-sized, groveling waves under 1m. Occasional pulses of 1.5m+ swell can arrive, but the general vibe is relaxed, making this the go-to season for longboarders and those seeking mellow sessions.

August: Winter's Last Stand

August continues the winter theme with an average swell of 2.7m and the longest period of the year at 13.3s. Swell direction still favors SW (25.6%) and WSW (14%), with notable W and WNW contributions. The 10-14s period is the norm, while 15-19s swells occur often, delivering very powerful, long-period lines. Wind ideal percentage ticks up to 18%, with a slight increase in S-SSE offshore flows. The breeze pattern shows strong W and NW components (onshore) still dominate, but the frequency of clean S winds improves compared to mid-winter. August offers a last chance to score massive, epic waves before the swell size decreases. The water temperature is coolest, so get your thickest wetsuit if you're chasing that heavy, pumping set.
