Best Surf Season (October - March)

This is prime time for Sylt, as the island's west-facing coastline is exposed to the full brunt of powerful extratropical storms tracking across the Atlantic. The dominant swell directions from NW to WSW deliver consistent, often heavy surf. However, the same low-pressure systems that generate these swells also bring strong westerly winds that ruin wave quality. The magic happens when high pressure builds over Scandinavia or the Baltic, shifting winds to the east (ENE through SE). These offshore flows groom the waves into clean, punchy lines. Despite only 7-8% of hours being ideal, the winter months offer the best chance for epic, pumping surf at Sylt.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

Spring and early autumn are transitional periods. Average swell heights drop to 0.9-1.3m, and periods shorten to 5.5-6.0s. The North Atlantic storm track shifts north, reducing the frequency of strong swell events. However, these months also see a higher proportion of stable high-pressure systems that bring lighter, often easterly winds. This means cleaner conditions, albeit with smaller, fun-sized waves. April and September in particular can deliver surprisingly good sessions when a moderate westerly swell aligns with an offshore breeze. The waves are more suitable for groveling and high-performance surfing on longboards or fish.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest period for surf at Sylt. Average swell heights hover around 1.0m, and wave periods are short (5.4-5.6s), resulting in weak, crumbly surf. The dominant swell directions shift to NW and W, but the wave energy is low and often mixed with short-period windswell. Westerly winds remain prevalent, further degrading quality. While occasional long-period groundswell from distant storms can sneak in, it's rare. The best hope for surfers during these months is a small easterly windswell on a high-pressure day, providing tiny, weak waves for beginners or loggers. Overall, summer is best left to beachgoers and windsurfers.

January: Winter's Peak Power

January delivers the highest average swell heights of the year at 1.8m, with periods averaging 6.8s — squarely in the 'average, punchy, rideable' category. The swell rose is dominated by NW (11.5%), W (10.4%), and WSW (10.4%) directions, all of which are optimal for Sylt's west-facing beaches. However, these same quadrants also produce the strongest onshore winds: SW and WSW each account for 10% of the wind distribution, with a significant share of speeds over 20kph. This combination often creates messy, choppy conditions. The key to good surf lies in the easterly winds (E, ESE, SE) that blow offshore. Combined, these directions make up about 15.5% of the wind, but only 7% of the time is the wind truly ideal (light and offshore). When a high-pressure system sets in from Scandinavia, the waves clean up into powerful, 1.5-2.5m lines that can be 'pumping' to 'heavy'.
