Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic comes alive during the autumn and winter months, sending consistent, powerful groundswells from the W to NNW quadrants directly into Tamri's NW-facing beach. Average swell heights hover around 2.1 to 2.3m with long periods averaging 12-13 seconds, producing pumping, firing waves that can easily reach XL proportions when the strongest storms align. The trade-off is a healthy dose of onshore wind from the N-NW, but the percentage of ideal offshore flow (W, WSW, SW, SSW) peaks during these months—especially in December, January, and November when it exceeds 44%. This is the window for top-tier surf, with clean, lined-up faces and light offshore conditions often accompanying high-pressure setups over the Sahara. If you can only plan one trip, aim for November through February.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months offer a mixed bag. April sees the last of the winter power—average swell height remains a solid 2.1m but the period drops to 10.8s and ideal wind percentages fall sharply to 19%. The dominant swell direction shifts strongly towards NNW, which is still a good angle for Tamri, but the wind becomes increasingly dominated by N-NW flow, making clean conditions rarer. September brings a slight rebound in period (10.0s) after the summer lull, but swell heights average just 1.6m. Ideal wind percentages climb to 18%, offering occasional windows of fun, rippable waves on the smaller side. These months are for the dedicated surfer willing to pick their days.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, Tamri experiences its lowest surf activity. The North Atlantic storm track shifts north, resulting in average swell heights between 1.6 and 1.9m and periods as low as 7.6 to 9.3 seconds—generally small, groveling conditions. The wind pattern is dominated by strong N to NNW flow, which blows directly onshore at Tamri, ruining wave quality. Ideal offshore wind (from the SW sector) occurs only 8-13% of the time. Swell direction is overwhelmingly from the NNW (over 90% of total swell in July and August), which, while technically in the optimal range, is accompanied by onshore winds that chop up the waves. This is the quiet season, best suited for beginners or those seeking a beach holiday rather than serious surf.

March: Winter Hangs On

March maintains winter-like swell energy as the season begins to shift. Average swell height remains at 2.3m with a period of 12.3s, still solid and powerful. The dominant swell direction is heavily NNW (34.6%), followed by NW (22.9%) and WNW (8.6%). These are all optimal angles. A notable 14.4% of waves from NNW are in the 2-2.5m range, and 1.4% exceed 2.5m. The ideal wind percentage drops to 34%, as N and NNW winds become more frequent (total 33.8% for N+NNW). These winds blow onshore at Tamri, so you need to pick your windows. Fortunately, the ESE through S winds still provide occasional offshore flow. March offers the last consistent month of big winter swell before the spring transition, making it a reliable choice for experienced surfers.
