Best Surf Season (October - February)

The winter months bring the most reliable swell to Urbiztondo, driven by the strengthening of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) and distant mid-latitude storms in the North Pacific. Swell consistently arrives from the NNW, the most favorable direction for this NW-facing beach, with average heights hovering between 0.7m and 0.8m and periods stretching into the 7-8 second range, offering punchy, rideable waves. However, the wind is a double-edged sword: the same monsoon often delivers northerly winds, which are onshore and can chop up the surf. The magic happens when high-pressure systems stall or when a weak trough allows for southerly offshore flow — that is when the wave quality goes from average to fun and rippable. The best windows typically occur during cold front passages or when the Siberian High relaxes, granting lighter winds from the SW to SSW quadrant. With ideal wind conditions only 22-26% of the time, patience and a sharp eye on the forecast are key, but the reward is consistent, groomed waves.

Fair Surf Season (March, April, September)

As the Amihan transitions into the inter-monsoon period, swell energy drops off but doesn't disappear entirely. March and April see the fading of NNW swells, with heights dwindling to 0.4-0.5m and periods dropping under 6.5 seconds, becoming more groveling and small. The wind patterns shift more frequently to southerly quadrants (S, SSW, SW), which are offshore, but these light breezes (0-10 kph) dominate, making conditions often glassy but underpowered. September acts as a transitional month where the early signs of the winter swell return appear. Swell heights average 0.6m with a period of 7.0s, and the swell direction begins to swing back from a summer WSW pattern to a more promising WNW to NNW mix. While not as consistent as the peak winter months, these months offer more manageable conditions for beginners and loggers, with offshore winds frequently present (12-23% ideal wind). Occasional small pulses can provide fun-sized waves for those willing to paddle hard.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

This is the most challenging period for surf at Urbiztondo. The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) dominates, driving persistent winds from the S, SSW, and SW at speeds often 10-30 kph. While these directions are technically offshore for the spot, the swell they generate is primarily from the WSW to SSW — directions that are side-shore to onshore relative to the NW-facing beach. The wave heights creep up slightly during July and August to an average of 0.6m, but the energy comes in short-period (6.5-7.2s) bumps, resulting in weak, crumbly waves that rarely produce a steep or hollow face. The ideal wind percentage actually peaks during these months (20-31%), but since the swell direction is often wrong, even clean conditions yield only small, weak waves. Locals and longboarders can find the odd fun session on a WSW or NW pulse, but most days are better spent on other activities. Keep an eye on tropical cyclone activity in the region: a passing typhoon can bring unruly, stormy surf, but occasionally a well-timed swell from a distant storm can light up the beach with unexpected 1-1.5m waves before disappearing.

August: The Best of a Bad Season

August offers the highest ideal wind percentage of the year at 31%, with winds predominantly from S (30.9%) and SSW (25.3%) blowing offshore. Swell heights average 0.6m and periods lengthen slightly to 7.2s. The wave direction is still mainly WSW (62.1%), but there is a subtle shift with increased W (16.7%) and a hint of WNW (5.5%) and NW (2.6%) — these are the directions that can actually produce rideable waves. The 0.5-1m range is well represented (32.1% from WSW), and 1-1.5m waves occur 9.2% of the time from the southwest quadrant. The combination of clean offshore winds and occasional pulses from the west makes August the most surfable month of the low season. A longboard or a fish is still the weapon of choice, but on a good day, the waves can be fun and peel for a decent ride. Typhoon swells are a wildcard — they can bring larger, more powerful waves from the WNW to NW, transforming the beach into a punchy, hollow playground for a day or two.
