Vale Figueiras in Portugal is a spot that thrives on consistent ground swells, with the best conditions typically occurring during the winter months when the Atlantic delivers powerful and clean waves. The data shows that November and December stand out as prime months for surfers, offering the highest likelihood of ground swell (90% and 89%, respectively), the largest mean swell size (2.5m), and a slight edge in favorable wind conditions compared to other winter months. January and February also provide excellent ground swell percentages (90% and 86%) with decent swell sizes (2.1m and 2.0m), though wind conditions are less favorable, with bad winds occurring over 75% of the time. March sees a slight drop in ground swell dominance (81%) but remains a strong option with a 1.9m mean swell. From April onward, ground swells diminish significantly, giving way to wind swells, which become the primary source of waves by May through August. These summer months (June, July, August) feature smaller swells (1.1m) and consistently poor wind conditions (over 80% bad winds), making them less ideal for quality surfing. September and October mark a transitional period, with ground swells increasing again (46% and 64%) and slightly better wind conditions in October (26% good winds), though swell size remains modest (1.2m–1.5m). Overall, the best time for high-performance surfing at Vale Figueiras is between November and March, when large, clean ground swells dominate, despite the challenging wind conditions. Summer is only suitable for beginners or those willing to compromise on wave quality.
