Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during this period, with extratropical storms firing consistent, long-period swell from the NW quadrant. Average wave heights consistently exceed 2m (pumping to firing range), and periods average 12-13s, delivering powerful, well-organized lines that wrap beautifully into Vale Figueiras west-north-west exposure. Offshore wind potential peaks during these months as high-pressure systems park over mainland Europe, funnelling cool, dry easterly winds (E/ESE/SE/SSE) that groom the faces into glassly perfection. December and January boast the highest ideal wind frequency (36-39%), while October through March all see an average of 27-39%. This is prime time for heavy, pumping, firing conditions that reward experienced surfers with world-class barrels and steep drop-ins.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

Transitional months characterized by a gradual easing of both swell size and consistency. Average heights drop to 1.5-1.9m, and periods shorten to 10-11s, meaning the waves are still solid and rippable but less explosive than winter. The trade-off is a lower chance of ideal offshore wind (16-20% of the time) as the northerly wind regime strengthens. Swell direction remains predominantly NW, but with more interference from local windswell that can chop things up. When the right combination of a late-season Atlantic low and a high-pressure ridge align, expect clean, fun-sized waves that are excellent for carving and progressive surfing. These months can deliver some of the best shoulder-to-head-high days with lighter crowds.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The summer doldrums settle over the Iberian coast as the Atlantic storm track retreats northward. Swell heights dwindle to an average of 1.4m, and periods drop to 8-9s—typical windswell territory. Over 85% of the swell comes from the N/NW/NNW quadrant, which combined with dominant onshore N/NNW winds (40-47% of the time) produces messy, weak, choppy conditions. Ideal offshore wind is scarce (8-11% of the time), and the occasional east wind event is often short-lived. Most days are small and groveling, best suited for longboards or doing something else. However, if a late-season tropical system or a stray low sends a pulse, it's possible to get a few fun, punchy waves on the better sandbars—but consistent quality is rare.

March: Late Winter Gold

March maintains robust swell energy, averaging 2.2m and 12.3s—still solid to pumping. The swell direction shifts slightly more toward WNW (17.4%) and less NW (27.6% versus 27.5% in Jan), meaning more west in the swell angle—which is still directly on the beach. Wave heights cluster around 1.5-2.5m, so expect heavy, hollow waves on the better sandbars. Ideal wind slips to 27%, but the easterly quadrant remains present, especially around the edges of high pressure. March often delivers clean, powerful surf days with fewer crowds than the heart of winter. The season is winding down, but there's still plenty of firing potential, especially if you chase the wind.
