September still holds onto winter swell momentum, but the wind becomes less reliable as the season transitions. You'll find fun, rippable conditions, but you'll need to pick your windows carefully as onshore easterlies become more frequent.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

The summer months bring a stark contrast. From October to February, the average swell height holds at 1.6-1.8m, but the period drops to 8.7-9.4s, reflecting shorter-period, less powerful windswell. More importantly, offshore winds are scarce, occurring only 14-18% of the time. The predominant winds shift to the northeast through east-southeast—directly onshore—wrecking wave shape and creating choppy, messy conditions. The Indian Ocean high-pressure belt weakens, and thermal lows over the interior pull in humid, easterly flow. While a rogue long-period groundswell can still sneak through, the odds are stacked against clean, offshore surf. It's a time for groveling or waiting for the autumn transition.

August: Late-Winter Bounty

August is the last full month of prime conditions. Average swell height nudges up to 1.8m, the highest of the year, with a period of 10.2s—still well in the powerful zone. Offshore wind frequency remains high at 41%, though the winds start shifting slightly back toward more southwesterly and westerly directions. Swell distribution broadens: east (14.2%), east-northeast (14.2%), east-southeast (11.6%), southeast (11.5%), south-southeast (16.6%), and south (20.9%). The east-northeast component is notable, likely from distant tropical systems or backend fetch. While winter is waning, August still delivers plenty of pumping days. Early-season cold fronts can still pack a punch, and the combination of solid swell with offshore winds creates classic Westbrook conditions. A great month to load up.
